Point Lonsdale Boardriders Autumn Newsletter- 2005

Welcome everyone to the Point Lonsdale Boardriders for 2005. Well, surf wise it has been a year of pretty slim pickings, but with Easter upon us who knows what autumn swells could arrive over the next few weeks. Here is the latest news.

THE COMMITTEE FOR 2005

As all of you would be aware by now the Boardriders held their Annual General Meeting somewhere in between the presentation for this years Greg Davison Memorial contest (congrats to Deano on the win), B.B.Q festivities and various members of the club joining in with the nights band for an all-star jam of sorts. The first committee meeting held back in February left most in attendance scratching their heads and asking ³Just who was elected for representation this year at the AGM ?!² After much deliberation and discussion, we were able to design the 2005 committee as such:

PRESIDENT: Tasman Blizzard

SECRETARY: Peter Withers

TREASURER: Ken Ferrier

FEMALE REPRESENTATIVE: Shayleigh Ray

COMMITTEE MEMBER: Michael Pinny

MALIBU REPRESENTATIVE: Ross Bird

As well as the above committee members representing the club in 2005, David Rowe has offered to assist in the Boardriders in an unofficial committee member capacity- and continuing to do his good work with his website www.ripview.com.au  Of course you can find contests dates, aggregate ratings, competition results and other general info at the site and for those of you who are a little less inclined to web surf than the real thing, I encourage you to get on board because access to the website makes communicating competition dates

and other info a lot easier to than a ring-around or posting snail mail. Granted, you can never beat word of mouth though.

We have asked the young brigade of Chris Martin, Cam Rezenbrink and Lachie Kerney to share the enormous job of contest director, which Michael Pinny has done so well for the club over the last few years, however we have experienced some teething problems with the idea of co-contest directors- because of the boys weekend work commitments etcŠ However Michael has agreed to continue to oversee the judging and all committee members are keen to chip in on the day to ensure all events run as smoothly as possible.

EVENT SCHEDULE FOR 2005

The committee met a few weeks ago to discuss the competition schedule for 2005. It has changed only slightly to previous years, with this weekends Easter competition being the most notable difference. We aware that some competition dates coincide with other community events or holidays and it is not possible for everyone to attend each event. With close to 100 members- across a wide age demographic- we hope that as many members can attend the events as possible. Fingers crossed for good weather and surf. Here are the dates:

OPEN COMPETITION: There will be five competitions for the season (with the Davo 2005 being the first). The Open competitions will be run across all categories possible on the day, ranging from Cadets, Junior Girls and Boys, Open Men and Women, Senior Men etcŠ The number of entrants will determine the categories for each of these events. For example, if we only have a couple of girls under the age of 15 enter on the weekend, then they will be asked to compete in the Junior Girls category. If however the numbers are thereŠthen we go with it.

·      EASTER SATURDAY MARCH 26th

·      SATURDAY 7TH OF MAY

·      SATURDAY 3RD OF SEPTEMBER

·      SATURDAY NOVEMBER 19TH

·      SATURDAY DECMBER 3rd Aggregate Presentation Night.

·      SATURDAY JANUARY 28TH- Greg Davison Memorial 2006.

Registration for these contests is usually between 8.30am and 9am at the Front Beach B.B.Qıs and the contest running time is decided on the day, depending on weather and tides. There is an entry fee of $5, which helps finance the presentation and B.B.Q following the event. Remember if you would like to surf in two categories on the day (For example Senior Menıs and the Open Menıs divisions), then you are stung $5 for each category.

MALIBU CONTESTS: We have already kicked off this years Malibu contests with a bang. The first of the three contests was held on Saturday March the 12th at Pont Lonsdale Backbeach. The results were as follows:

MENS

1st Place Graham Slade

2nd Place- John Lane

3rd Place- Tasman Blizzard

4th Place- Jock Benfell

WOMENS

1st Place- Shayleigh Ray

2nd Place- Sophie Rowe

3rd Place- Peter Withers

4th Place- Gayle Renzenbrink

5th Place- Elise Renzenbrink

6th Place- Hayley Quinn

The weather and surf gods were on our side, giving us 30 degree blue skies and a clean 2ft Offshore swell. All had a fun time and we had a number of new membership signings on the day. Sladey and Laney dominated all day and a personal highlight for me were the efforts of  Peter Withers securing a 3rd placing and Sophie Rowe taking it up to some of the more experienced girls to finish an impressive second place- well done to all.

We have two more scheduled events for this year for the Mals and they will take place on the following dates:

·      SATURDAY 23RD OF APRIL

·      SATURDAY 3RD OF DECEMMER (You may notice from above that this Malibu competition will coincide with the aggregate presentations scheduled for that evening.)

JUDGING CLINIC

Well it just ainıt a Boardriders competition- arguably anywhere in the country- without its fair share of missed heats, board throwing tantrums, scandalous interference calls, dubious weather and surf conditionsŠ and questionable judging decisions. Some of these things are beyond our control, but we thought that we could at least try and get the judging right. Last year Michael Pinney attended a Judging Clinic run by Surfing Victoria and Pinney has spent tireless hours on the Clubbie deck trying to explain contest formats and judging technique. One of the greatest points of contentions has been Pinneyıs frustration at contestants being awarded highly for going the safety route and for length of ride- whilst contestants riding shorter waves with more critical manoeuvres are not being justly rewarded.

So, to lie to rest the ins and outs of judging, the Boardriders will be hosting a ³JUDGING CLINIC & MOVIE NIGHT² at 7.30pm on Friday the 15th of April at the Pt. Lonsdale S.L.S.C. There will be no cost for members. Michael Pinney will talk to all in attendance about judging and we will present some surfing footage and workshop judging heats. This will be followed by a screening (on

Rowies Super Duper Home Theatre) of a latest release big-wave surfing movie- which I better not mention for copy right reasons.

I encourage all to attend this night, from the young ones who are little unconfident about there ability to judge, to some of us elder statesmen who just refuse to budge on there ways, the night will provide an opportunity for all members to improve on there judging skills.

And wait for itŠŠŠIıll just take this chance to let all members know that upon entering a competition this year. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO JUDGE AT LEAST ONE HEAT DURING ANY EVENT YOU ENTER AND TO HAVE YOUR NAME CHECKED OFF ON THE DAY- OR YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE AGGREGATE POINTS. Thanks for your co-operation. If we all pitch in there will be no dramas.

Hope to see you at the clinic!

OTHER NEWS

In other news the Boardriders are investigating the purchase of a trailer to haul all the competition equipment on the day of Club competitions. The trailer will make competition days just that little easier to set up etcŠ and trailer will also double as a central storage space for our equipment. Chris Laker of Laker Engineering has kindly offered to build a frame for the trailer so it is fully enclosed for all weather conditions. Thanks Chris.

Myself and secretary Peter Withers recently attended a forum for local sporting clubs. As well as a quick game of Croquet- in which myself and Peter dominated- attendees were treated to a talk titled ³Grants- how to access them and how to win them.² Along with learning many tricks of the trade when it comes to our club applying for grants, our attendance at the meeting ensures we will receive a monthly newsletter ³Easy Grants² displaying all the local, state, federal and philanthropic grants available for application. I received a monthly issue of this publication on the night and it contained 60 pages of grants available to clubs like ourselves. So fingers crossed for funding in 2005.

If you are interested in purchasing any merchandise feel free to contact myself or Shayleigh Ray  (MOB: 0417371388). We still have a number of short and long sleeve t-shirts, beanies, hats and other goodies available to purchase.

And finally, the club is now officially incorporated; so feel free to hit the surf with reckless abandon!

FINAL AKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would just this chance to say thanks to the previous committee for the effort and support they have put into the club over the last few years. From Sparks, Mitch, Rowie, Bazz, Pinney and to all those who have chipped in thanks for keeping the club not only running, but thriving. I would like to thank Phippsy, Blizz, Nicol Wylie and Co, who really started the resurgence of the club by injecting there efforts into rekindling the Greg Davison Memorial some time age. Iıve surely forgotten people, as there are so many to mention, but thanks and hope to have your input into the club as it moves forward.

Thanks to our sponsors for there support again in 2005, we are currently gathering merchandise and other goodies for the club and I will be listing all of our sponsors in the Winter edition of the newsletter.

Also a collective Boardriders hug to James, George and Vicki Green who are supporting Tim Green through his recent health scare. Iım sure the doctor would not hesitate to encourage Tim to get back on the board and get amongst it A.S.A.P.
