Well thatıs winter done for the year and it was a bit of a shock to all surfers to see the backbeach bowel turning it on through winter, with some classic days that had me wondering if I was surfing a bowel at Joanna or Phillip Island. Everyone pushed through the winter chill to score some classic sessions at the backbeach bowel and the reefs firing on some winter weekends were not uncommon either.
2006 AGREGATE
The Boardriders held their 4th competition for the season at backbeach recently in tricky but fun 3-4ft surf. With a great turnout and some trying conditions, it made for quite a scene. That leaves the 5th and final aggregate competition for the year to be held on Sunday November the 5th. At the moment Cam Rhenzenbrink and Lachey Kerney are leading the way in the points and it may all be decided at the last competition. In the junior men things are getting very interesting indeed. Stu Ferrier and Ben Malouf are battling it out for the title, but the Jan Juc smokey Tom Edgar- who has only surfed in two competitions for the year- has a habit of showing up and winning on the day taking points from the two main contenders. Shayleigh and Jade continue to dominate the Womenıs division, but the junior womenıs division is a much closer affair. It seems to be down to a two horse race with Elise Rhenzenbrink and Stephanie Crowley-Clough winning all four competitions between them. She who places higher in the final event will probably decide the junior girl champion for 2006- what a final that will be to watch come November 5. Stu Ferrier looks the goods in cadets but the race for 2nd and 3rd is a lot closer. Jackson Wylie continues to bop up in finals and his surfing continues to improve with every event. In the Senior Menıs Sparx was a noticeable absence from yesterdayıs proceedings opening the door for Gary Kerney to take a victory and grab some vital points.
So there are some great tussles taking place and remember folks, in the aggregate totals, surfers are afforded the pleasure of dropping one competition result for the season, so total points are based on only your four best results- that could throw a spanner in the works for some divisions indeed!
The aggregate championship presentation night is scheduled to be held on Saturday November the 11th at the S.L.S.C. Check the website out for any details in the future. Also on the evening of the presentations, we will be taking nominations for the 2007 committee. Sadly, both Shayleigh Ray and Ross Bird will not be nominating for the committee in 2007. Shayleigh has made a fantastic contribution to the committee over the last 2 years and her enthusiasm and smile will be hard to replace. Ross has been virtually glued to the decking on competition day always pitching in with judging and assuring that all goes smooth on comp day. These are big shoes to fill members, so your commitment to your committee would be greatly appreciated. Nomination slips will be available on the presentation night and the committee will be elected as per usual during our AGM held on the Saturday evening of the Greg Davison Memorial contest.
SURFING VICTORIA INFORMATION
I recently attended the Victorian Boardriders seminar on behalf of the Point Lonsdale Boardriders. The most pertinent issue discussed was the format for this years up and coming Victorian Teams Titles event to be held at Bells Beach on the 28th of October. There were a lot of rumblings from the East Coast clubs saying they were not happy with the current teams titles format. In years gone by, the Vic Teams Titles was a weekend event and had as many as 8 surfers from each club surfing in a four-man format similar to individual competition formats. However, for the last few years the format has been a tag team style event, with around 4 to 6 surfers competing in a one-hour heat. Some clubs are unhappy that such an event has been reduced to a one hour heat and would like to see the Vic Teams Titles restored to itıs former glory. The incumbent champion Torquay Boardriders club are very happy with the current format thankyou very much as they have won for something like the last three years - and are a little reluctant to change the format. Part of the problem in changing the current format is finding the time and a location in torquay. Surfing Victoria are only allowed 5 permits per year to run competitions at Bells Beach. Two permits are used for competitions of international significance (The Jetty Surf and Billabong pro juniors,) two are used for domestic events (such as the recent Victorian Masters & Australian University championships) which only leaves one permit to use. This permit is used for the Conservation Titles state round. So in order to run the Victorian Teams Titles at Bells, they simply throw a heat in the water on the weekend of the Conservation titles. There is not enough time to run a weekend event in conjunction with the state round and thus the current format sticks. To their credit the Torquay Boardriders acknowledged that it would be good to increase the profile of the Teams Titles and will look to change the format in the future. Formats aside, I informed all present that the Pt. Lonsdale Boardriders are interested in entering a team this year regardless. I was politely told at the meeting that ³Point Lonsdale entering would be good, because if we had more clubs like yourselves entering we could look at developing a B-grade division..² Mmmmmmincentive enough for our club do yaı reckon ? ! ? ! ? ! With the right conditions and a bit of luck try and tell Phippsy, Dean, Cam and Lachie Kerney that we are not able to compete with the ³Club big guns² of Victorian Surfing. Bring it on! Once the format for this year has been finalised (which Surfing Vic have said will be done by the end of September) I will be looking for members interested in representing the team. The committee will then meet and select the team based on factors such as 2005 & 2006 aggregate rankings, current form, availability etc Will keep you posted on that one.
There are a number of up and coming events on the Surfing Vic calendar that may be of interest to some of our younger members. The Rip Curl Gromsearh is being held on 19th of September 22nd of September in Torquay. This is for 16 and under, 14 and under and 12 and under surfers- both boys and girls. The Roxy Surf Jam is also coming up on the 25th & 26th of November to be held at Jan Juc. If any of our junior members are interested in attending these events I have entry forms available for you, so all you have to do is get in contact for an entry form.
HOODED JUMPERS
The club has hooded jumpers which you can view on the Ripview website. We have sold many of these, but there are still some available in most sizes. The cost is $40 and families receive a discounted rate. Contact Shayleigh or myself if you would like to purchase one of these.
BOARDRIDERS ON THE BOX
Has anyone seen the Channel 31 T.V show on Thursday nights called Soulwater Surf? It is new Victorian Surf show produced locally show casing local Victorian talent and so on and so forth. Anyway, part of there show is dedicated to featuring local Boardriders clubs in Victoria and it seems we are next in line for a bit of preview. The new series recommences on Thursday October the 5th, so look out for that one; you might see yourself cutting up backbeach and/or Glanuese from the 2005 & 2006 Greg Davison Memorial footage captured by Lachie Fairburn.
Thatıs all for now, below are the remaining dates for
2006. This years Greg Davison event will be held on the Australia Day Weekend
and it promises to be huge as it is the 30th anniversary of the
event. Last but not least, Iım sure I speak for all when I say get well Sladie
and we hope to see you out the surf more and more. It just isnıt the same
without Sladie doing his thing!
