NEWSLETTER JUNE 03
The Point Lonsdale Board riders Club is back in town in a big way!!!
At the time of going to press the club has a membership of just on one hundred, which
for a town the size of Point Lonsdale is a phenomenal effort. More pleasing still is the
fact that the membership encompasses all aspects of the local population and is
particularly strong in the areas of cadet junior and family membership.

The first round of the aggregate competition was run on the 22 of the 3rd with the usual
amount of sunny Point Lonsdale weather, perfect back beach surf, floorless
administration and our usual highbrow presentation ceremony where scantily clad
supermodels handed out enormous cash prizes. No prizes however for guessing who
must have received a sharp blow to the head!
In truth, the weather was awful and the surf was junk but the enthusiasm level was
through the roof and the standard of surfing particularly in the finals, was red hot. As far
as being a showcase for the new Point Lonsdale Boardriders Club, in spite of the lousy
conditions, it couldn’t have been better.
At the time of writing we had around fifty paid members, many of whom took part in the
competition. Even some of those who joined specifically for the mal comps had a crack
at the extremely testing conditions. Prizes were awarded for the first three place getters
in each division including the new Cadets section. The Groms had great little waves at
the pier beach and by all accounts put on a top show for those who were there to
watch. A big thanks to Bazz and Keith for looking after what amounted to a comp within
a comp.
Have a good look at the results elsewhere in this magazine and cast your mind forward
to presentation night sometime in November. Can the current leaders maintain their
momentum? Bear in mind that Phippsy is back off to France at the end of April, which
should blow the seniors wide open. As well as Col watch out for Andrew Lynch, Steve
Sopo and maybe Josh Withers as some dark horses. In the juniors new member Elliot
Grey from Ocean Grove managed to steal the local boys thunder and it remains to be
seen wether Cam, Lochie and the usual suspects can stamp some dominance on the
next three rounds. In the Cadets it looks like team Cohen has got the jump on team
Orvis but don’t be surprised to see team Ferrier makes a move and expect the fur to
fly when the big guns from Melbourne arrive.. In the grumpy old mens division expect
to see the contender who can best control his arthritis on the winners podium at the
end of the year.

Final results in all divisions were:

Cadets Final:

1st.Hayden Cohen. 2nd.Stuart Ferrier. 3rd.Luke Orvis. 4th.Sophie Rowe.
5th.Jake Headley.

Junior Final:
1st.Elliot Grey. 2nd. Lachlan Kerney. 3rd. Mitch Davies.
4th.Cameron Renzenbrink

Over 40s Final:
1st: Graeme Briggs. 2nd.Gary Kerney. 3rd Keith Cohen 4th.Ross Bird. 5th Ken Ferrier

Open Mens Final:
1st.Mark Phipps 2nd.Colin Gleeson 3rd.Cameron Renzenbrink
4th.Lachlan Kerney

Following the event a barbeque and presentation was held at the front beach picnic area and a
good time was had by all and a fair bit of rubbish was spoken by those who stayed until
stumps.

On Easter Sunday the club held the first of its specialty competitions that being the Onshore
Masters Malibu competition and the Gromfest (Gromshore Masters ???) under 15 event. Surf
for the day was quite possibly the best for any competition I have seen here in the last 26
years with the back beach looking more like something from the pages of a surfing magazine.
Sunshine, a crowd of interested spectators and red hot surfing to match the waves.
In the Cadets event the final results were:
Cadets Final
1st.James Merritt .2nd.Nic Stephens. 3rd.Hayden Cohen. 4th.Stuart Ferrier 5th.Will Simpson
6th.Luke Orvis.

The quality of surfing from the cadets is going ahead in leaps and bounds and it wont be long
before Point Lonsdale is again represented at state level competition.
In the open Malibu the level of surfing was as good as you could possibly hope to see.
The ranks of the club have been swelled by State representatives John Lane and Scott Wintle
from Torquay and pro tour aspirant Rob Emslie from Ocean Grove. Having said that, all were
bested on the day by local legend Graham Slade. As with Phippsy, at times I think we just don’t
appreciate how good Sladey is at his chosen sport and it could truly be said that he has
performed outstandingly at the elite level in Malibu surfing and continues to do so.

Open Malibu Results:
1st.Graham Slade. 2nd.John Lane 3rd.Rob Emslie 4th.Mitch Whitley.
Presentations were made on the Sunday night at the Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club to
whom we owe much thanks for generously allowing the use of their facilities.
Thanks also to Nichol Wylie and Ripcurl, Mark Phipps, Quiksilver, Roxy, the Springs
Convenience Store and especially Rodney Nicholson of Sea Gems Gallery for kindly
organising and donating prizes for all of the past events.
A reminder to all club members that the next round of aggregate competition is on Sunday May
1st of June and that club merchandise including T shirts and stickers are available through the
committee or by phoning 52583299
In upcoming issues I hope to open a few cans of worms by raising the question, “who is or was
the best.” Take into account that my surfing experience in Point Lonsdale only stretches as far
back as about 1976 and there has got to be a pot load of contenders who I have never seen.
Hows this for starters. Johnny Roberts or Michael Pinney at Lighthouse? Mick Davies or Mark
Phipps at the Back Beach(Or even Steve Batson or Sparks at Glaneuse...AB ). Bear in mind
differences in eras and equipment and we should have a nasty little debate that could go all
year. Any constructive comments should be addressed to myself or another member of the
committee for inclusion in upcoming issues.
All the best in surfing
Sparx

Good news Sparx....100 members incredible.....hopefully we will organise the mailing of this by
the next issue so apologies if you have not recieved this pronto. Soon we should have a PDF
version on Rowies www.ripview.com.au site.....I have just been ironing out some problems but
thats another story !!! I think Sparks has covered most of the important issues, I would like to
just give a brief overview on what the commitee has been so diligently meeting about. 1st off,
we have our club insurance so as long as you are a member you have limited insurance cover
as a competitor of our events and hence we now have a club...yipee. Second we are plodding
along but we still need a treasurer, Wes and Sparx are handling the finances but now that we
have 100 members it would be great if somebody local could handle contributing to managing
the money side as these things do not happen on their own.
We now have a points system for the aggregate that was brainstormed by Michael Pinney and
the comitee has agreed upon, it works as follows:
A maximum of fifty points have been allocated to each heat with regards to 4 or 5 'person' heat,
Fifth Place: 10 points. Fourth Place: 20 points. Third Place: 30 points. Second Place: 40 points.
First Place: 50 points. We feel that this system is fair as it rewards you for doing well in a heat
and it means that the more people that enter the competition the more points are available as a
competitor progresses throughout the competition. It also encourages people to compete as the
more heats you go in the more points you will be rewarded with At this stage we will not list the
ratings, after the second competition, in the next newsletter we will list the top six competitors.

Just to confuse the issue please be reminded that the aggregate is decided over your 3 best
results of the 4 competitions and in the case of the Cadets 4 of their 5 competitions .
Remember that we have the double whammy factor as well. For example if the Easter mal
competition was an open competition, which I might add is against our policy of having a
competition in surfable surf, we may have decided as a collective to make the competition a
doulble whammy !!!! Mmmmmmm......that means people have to participate to earn the double
points.....that being said we do not have to use the double whammy at all if the conditions do
not permit. I think that has covered briefly all the important information. The next competition is:
SECOND AGGREGATE COMPETITION
SUNDAYJUNE 01. MEET 9:30AM SHARP AT FRONT STREET.
3RD AGGREGATE COMPETITION
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13.
START TIME TO BE ANNOUNCED
4TH AGGREGATE COMPETITION

Now a few words for from the long time absent Auntie Mavis..........
Hello my little lovlies...as you can see it has been a long time since I have had to write so
please excuse my shortness. Now just a few questions to ponder....Who was the committee
member who asked how to spell dumb? I have alot of faith in those boys you know. Now a few
of you local lads have been doing well on the state circuit...I even saw an older bloke take out a
competitor in a competition at Woolami while he was belly boarding in...apparantly he did
himself proud to.....seems his sight might be going as well.....now who is that young French
magician....appparantly his wife is pregnant...mmmmmm......hope it wasnt while he was away,
hopefully the dates will match...well we will see the strength of that relationship once that little
Aussie comes on the scene wont we!!!! Speaking of the little Rover seems he won another Vic
title as an over 35 and came second as a senior man......what a champion !!! Seems that lovely
man who drives the ford and has a dog named Jack has been quietly achieving as well.....won
the Over 50's State malibu comp recently and placed second in the open I hear.......really it
comes as no surprise the level of surfing in this little town....many of the youngins have been
surfing at state level......but I cant know everything you know so keep those ears close to the
ground......on an international level that young Michael Jackson worries me......I recently was
sent a picture of his latest denial of plastic surgery and I must say it does worry me a litte. This
time I think he has taken it just to far !!!!!!
Remeber people that the boardriders long sleeve t-shirts are
now available for $30 and stickers for $2.
